Soccer superstar Alex Morgan, a driving force for the USA team that won the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cup, was surprised with a huge gift, literally.
‘Liberty Alex’ is the 20-foot-tall statue honoring the United States Women National Team (USWNT) striker, unveiled less than a month before the 2023 Women’s World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
Alex Morgan, the face of the United States
Alex Morgan was present at the Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy, where the unveiling took place of the statue holding World Cup trophy in one hand and a ball in the other, with an U.S. flag wrapped around it.
To honor Morgan’s performance and for having been a “key piece” in the two-time USWNT team championship, Fox Sports commissioned a replica of the Statue of Liberty adapting it to the likeness of the 33 year old player.
The company also ordered the statue as part of its promotion for the Women’s World Cup.
“Alex is one of the most decorated players on the team. She not only represents the team but all of United States soccer. Alex has won two World Cups and was the perfect person to-represent soccer in this country,” said a company spokesperson.
The statue, will remain in the United States, and be available for public access at Bank ofAmerica Stadium during the Gold Cup, then traveling to the MLB All-Star Game in Seattle on July 11th and later to FOX Square in New York, from July 16-26.
The US Women’s National team will seek to defend its crown attained in 2019, starting with the group stage against the Netherlands, Portugal and Vietnam as part of Group E, with their first game on July 21st.
